Boudoir photography is a different beast to everyday makeup. We know you’re beautiful in your daily life, especially if you’re a hair and makeup lover. Our artists understand photography. Certain hairstyles and makeup applications are photographed differently under studio lighting.

You are hiring a studio who takes boudoir seriously. We want to give you the best experience a person can have. The importance of professional hair and makeup lies in how it photographs. Though you may have a go-to artist of your own, no one understands the needs of our studio quite like Dessa.

Professional Hair Prep for Your Boudoir Photoshoot

We understand there is a wide range of hair types. Some of us need to wash our hair every day to ensure it won’t get oily. Others only wash once a week. No matter your normal routine, we recommend washing your hair on photoshoot day or the night before. And if you’re prone to oily hair, make sure you throw in some dry shampoo. The likelihood that your hands (or your partner’s) will be in your hair during your shoot is high. 

If you have a specific style you are looking for, make sure your stylist knows on the shoot day. Otherwise, getting your hair dyed and cut should be left to your favorite stylist. We recommend getting your hair done about a week before your shoot. Lastly, treat yo’ self. Give your hair a great conditioning treatment within the week leading up to your shoot. 

Once you are with us, it’s your turn to sit back and relax. We will get your hair perfect before your session.

Professional Makeup Prep for Your Boudoir Photoshoot

Some of our clients have admitted they have never had professional makeup done. If that’s you, you are in for a treat! A great makeup artist accentuates your features and understands how makeup photographs on skin under professional lighting. Cameras can sometimes be brutal, especially under certain lighting. The makeup we wear every day can almost seem invisible under studio lights. We want you to see your photographs and feel flawless, and that’s why we include the professional hair and makeup fee. 

So, with that in mind, how do you prep your skin to ensure the best makeup application? Hydration and exfoliation are key to great skin and makeup application. Getting a skincare routine down can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Drinking water is great for your body and skin, and coming to your shoot with clean, hydrated skin will help get the best makeup application. 

Your skin is the largest organ on your body. If you care for your skin, it won’t only benefit you for your boudoir session–it will benefit your overall health and wellness.

Visualizing Your Preferences and Look for Your Photoshoot

As a luxury boudoir studio, of course we are picky. Clients often come in with photo references for how they prefer their hair and makeup, and to that we say, YES! After all, this photoshoot is your time to shine. Do you want a smokey eye? How about a bold lip? Do you want your hair styled up or down? Curly or straight? 

Each of us has our own preferences, and knowing what our professionals can produce means we know exactly how it will photograph. Flawlessly. If you want your session themed, maybe you already know what your hair and makeup should look like. If you are coming into our studio because you want to do something wild, maybe you plan to leave that up to the artists.
